For communities to experience meaningful and lasting development, citizens must have the opportunity to participate, speak up, and hold institutions accountable. At Stepping Stone CBO, we believe that empowered communities are at the heart of good governance.
Since 2023, Stepping Stone CBO has had the opportunity to work with The Institute for Social Accountability (TISA) through the TUNU (Tupigane na Ufisadi) Project, a partnership that has strengthened our capacity to promote transparency, integrity, citizen participation, and public accountability in our community.
Through this partnership, we have gained valuable knowledge and practical skills that have enabled us to engage more effectively with citizens and stakeholders on matters affecting our communities.
Taking Accountability to the Grassroots
One of the most important lessons from our TUNU journey is that accountability is not only a responsibility of government institutions. It is also a responsibility of citizens and communities.
When citizens understand their rights, participate in public affairs, access information, and ask questions about how public resources are used, they become powerful contributors to better governance.
Through our community work in Homa Bay County, Stepping Stone CBO continues to encourage citizens to take an active role in issues affecting their lives and communities.
Building Stronger Community Voices
The TUNU partnership has also demonstrated the importance of working together.
Being part of a wider network of more than 220 Community-Based Organizations across 11 counties has provided an opportunity to learn from other grassroots organizations, share experiences, and strengthen collective efforts towards greater accountability.
For Stepping Stone CBO, this network has reinforced the belief that local organizations have an important role to play in identifying community challenges, amplifying citizens’ voices, and advocating for responsive governance.
Empowering Citizens for Lasting Change
Our experience has shown us that sustainable change begins with informed and empowered citizens.
Through civic engagement and community awareness, we continue to encourage people to participate in governance processes, understand public programs, demand transparency, and contribute constructively to the development of their communities.
The journey has not always been easy, but the progress made demonstrates what can be achieved when communities, local organizations, and partners work together toward a common goal.
Looking Ahead
As we continue our journey, Stepping Stone CBO remains committed to strengthening citizen participation, promoting integrity, and supporting initiatives that contribute to accountable and responsive governance in Homa Bay County and beyond.
We are grateful to TISA and the TUNU Project for recognizing the important role played by grassroots organizations and for investing in local leadership.
Our journey reminds us that change does not always begin in large institutions. It begins in communities, with citizens who are informed, organized, and willing to make their voices heard.
