Kakdhimu West, Homa Bay County — 8 September 2026

Stepping Stone CBO joined the community of Kakdhimu West in marking International Literacy Day 2026, bringing together adult learners, community members and local leadership for a celebration centred on literacy, lifelong learning and sustainable livelihoods.

Held in Kakdhimu West Sub-location, Kakdhimu West Location, Rachuonyo West Sub-County, Homa Bay County, the event provided an opportunity for adult learners to demonstrate how literacy and numeracy skills can translate into practical opportunities for individuals, families and the wider community.

A key highlight of the celebration was an exhibition by adult learners, showcasing skills and products developed through literacy and numeracy programmes. The exhibition featured basketry, beadwork, agriculture, value addition and other community-based skills, demonstrating the connection between education and economic empowerment.

The event was also attended by Chief Malachi Otoyi, who inspected the adult learners’ exhibition and interacted with participants as they showcased their work.

Literacy Beyond the Classroom

The celebration highlighted the important role of adult education in enabling community members to acquire practical knowledge and skills that can improve their livelihoods.

Through activities such as basketry, beadwork and agricultural value addition, learners demonstrated that literacy is not limited to reading and writing. It can also provide a foundation for entrepreneurship, financial awareness, improved agricultural practices, creativity and sustainable community development.

For Stepping Stone CBO, the celebration represented its commitment to supporting communities through programmes that connect education with practical skills and opportunities.

Promoting Lifelong Learning

The 2026 International Literacy Day theme reflected the broader message of “Literacy for People, Planet and Prosperity.” The Kakdhimu West celebration brought this message to life by demonstrating how learning can contribute to individual development while supporting families and communities.

The event also reinforced the importance of creating opportunities for adults to continue learning regardless of age or previous educational background.

Stepping Stone CBO remains committed to initiatives that promote lifelong learning, community empowerment, skills development and sustainable development, working alongside local communities and stakeholders to create meaningful opportunities for growth.

As the celebration demonstrated, literacy is more than the ability to read and write—it is a foundation for participation, opportunity, dignity and a more empowered community.
